My Tech Column Archive (2012–2013)

Today I want to take a look back at where we were just a decade ago.

I’ve recently dug into my personal archive of notes—the actual scripts and research I prepared before every single broadcast at Radio Trelew Noticias. If you look at the metadata and filenames, you’ll see the timeline of a world in transition: from the screeching sounds of dial-up modems to the birth of the "phablet".

To give you a better feel for the atmosphere at the station, check out this video of us in action at the studio. Sitting at that table with Meirion and Romina, we tackled the "future" every week. Here is what we were talking about:

1. The TDA Revolution & The End of 3D
We spent a lot of time explaining Televisión Digital Abierta (TDA). It was a massive social plan for Argentina, using the ISDB-T (Japanese-Brazilian) standard to bring high-definition, free-to-air signals to everyone. We helped listeners understand that they didn't need a new TV—just a decoder. Ironically, while we were pushing digital TV, we also reported on the end of ESPN’s 3D era, proving that not every "next big thing" sticks around.

2. Democracy in the Digital Age
One of our most intense debates involved Electronic Voting (VOT-AR). We discussed the success in Salta (2011) and pilot tests in Costa Rica, where 60% of voters opted for the electronic system. However, our notes from back then show we were already cautious. We discussed how anonymity is essential and why the system must remain "transparent," recommending paper trails to ensure trust and security.

3. Social Media Regrets and "Nomophobia"
Back in 2013, we were witnessing the birth of new habits. Instagram had just launched video, racking up 5 million uploads in 24 hours. We were also debating if "wasapear" should be a real word. But it wasn't all fun; we discussed nomophobia (mobile addiction) and a striking statistic from that time: 29% of young adults already regretted their social media posts, fearing they would hurt their future job prospects.

4. The Battle for the Environment
We didn't just talk about gadgets; we talked about their "afterlife." My notes highlight the struggle for the Electronic Waste Law (Ley de Basura Electrónica). We covered how Greenpeace accused officials of blocking the law to favor multinational corporations, and we made sure to tell our Trelew listeners exactly where they could take their old batteries locally.

5. Gadgets of the Future (That are now our Present)
Looking back at the "new" tech is fascinating. We talked about Google’s self-driving cars, the family-sized solar car "Stella", and the rise of drones. We even featured Tile and Nokia Bluetooth tags, which were then-novel ways to stop losing your keys.
This archive isn't just a collection of notes; it’s a time capsule of how we moved from the "handshaking" protocols of Dial-Up to the massive undersea cables that now power our global broadband.

The wire - less madness

Lately working with Lora device I have learned that we are really close to create big impact changes with relatively little investing.    I've started my mesh during a research to communicate my postbox with my Home Assistant setup. In all the apartments where I lived this really got me; I wanted that when the post agent left something for me it should notify me somehow. This could have been because I've worked far from my place, or even because otherwise every time I need to go check it. During this mission I only counted with a bunch of ESP32s that could be used for communication using WiFi, Bluetooth and ESPnow. That's awesome but unfortunately not enough.  Suddenly when looking for sensors for other project, I've found SX126X and SX127X which are modules for LoRa communication. And pretty cheap ones!    2022 I've got some Heltec V1 (Stockholm)   Is good to mention that this technology uses ISM which basically is that the states provide a license-free b...

My own Departure Board (V1)

A screen that tells you when the next train is coming, built with the same complexity as a Mars mission. It all started on the blue line to Kista , riding Stockholm’s Tunnelbana. Half asleep, I was staring at the glowing “next departures” board when it hit me: "What if I built one of those for home?" Sure, I could’ve just opened an app like any normal human, but I chose the long, slow, bug-ridden path. Naturally. A while later, for my birthday, Roberto gave me a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W . Why? No idea. But clearly, it was fuel for my urge to overengineer things. With that little board in hand, my fate was sealed. Weeks later, we went to a Hopsworks meetup in Södermalm. Being a good Scandinavian tech event, it was full of beer. And not just any beer— Hopsworks has its own craft beer line , with labels that look like they came straight out of a DataFrame. Absolute chef’s kiss. They were showing how they use the Trafiklab API to feed an AI model that predicts public transport del...
